I was passing by UBH this morning and my mother commented on the over grown grass and she obviously felt sorry for the poor patients I mean imagine what they go through each night!! Then she went on to pass the comment: “make no mistake, if they were to put a white person in charge, conditions would change overnight!” This got me thinking about the validity of this statement, and like it or not it was TRUE.
The current condition of government institutions in the country as a whole are really bad, especially the hospitals, which in my opinion are the most crucial. The situation is so bad that authorities have described it as ‘pathetic’, and falling far below “the basic standards expected of a health institution.” Some of the problems include closed patient wards, leaking roofs on most buildings, a critical shortage of bed linen (with only 40 pairs of bed sheets available for 600 beds), as well as broken down washing machines and incinerators. Go to a hospital owned by a white person or owned by white people its a completely different story. Take for example the maternity clinic in Hillside, functioning wards, satisfied mothers, and they DO NOT have to bring their own blankets. Ok fine it can be said that those hospitals are privately owned and the government has no money to improve the current conditions. If this is true, you would think that a properly functioning government would improvise here and there to ensure a proper health sector. Secondly if money is an issue, someone explain to me why government officials have the poshest lifestyles? Aren’t they supposed to serve the public first?
In a city that has plus or minus 3 million people there are only 9 working dialysis machines, 1 is at Mpilo, the rest are at Mater Dei. One can go on to say that mater dei turns away patients if they do not have money for treatment, but at least they have some form of treatment. And yes it is run by a group of doctors, majority of whom are white.
I’m just saying, our health sector leaves much to be desired and whether we like it or not black people don’t always know it all. (i hope i won’t get killed for this!)
